Remembering Eli Matthews -- UPDATED (DONATIONS BEING TAKEN)

Yesterday we received the sad and unfortunate news that Eli Matthews (age 10) passed away after a courageous battle with Leukemia.

Eli was a friend of the gym and the inspiration behind all of our "Kick-A-Thons" to raise money for cancer research. He was an honorary member of our gym and Instructor Bill Hammond was proud to support his part in Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Eli's life and passing reminds us how lucky we are to have our health and the people around us. It also reminds us to make the most out of our training and lives.

Our thoughts are with Eli and his family.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

On this day honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., remember the lessons of the past to become a better person/martial artist.

In one of the meanings of Moosa (being a martial artist), we tell our students to build your knowledge about what is right and wrong. We also stress to be courageous in the fight for what is right, even if it may not be popular.

Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for civil rights in this country, even though it was more common/popular to segregate and discriminate against people of different races.

As martial artists and citizens, it's important to stay courageous in what we believe is right. For some of our adult students, this may be learning more about our communities and finding ways to volunteer for different causes.

For kids, this may be standing up to teasing and bullying. Maybe some of you feel it's okay to look the other way because "he or she is a little weird or different". However, remember to stand up for others rights and safety, since you would want others to stand up for you too. Maybe you won't be popular for doing so, but a clean conscience is better than popularity

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Black Belt Test Highlights

From everyone at the Dragon Gym of West Grove, Happy New Year!

Students: Remember to make new goals this year. The more specific the goal, the better. Examples might be higher kicks, stronger punches, more push ups or running, etc.

Congratulations to Phillip Leatherbury who received his black belt just before the holidays. Due to illness and a scheduling problem, Phillip was unable to attend the November test, but worked hard and completed a very difficult one-on-one test with Instructor Hammond!
