WEATHER - 9/30/2010

The forecast for the West Grove area appears to call for a flood warning, so we ask all parents and students to use your best judgement in coming to class today. In other words: no one blames you if you stay home today.

Our official policy is to use early dismissals and closings of AGSD (Avon Grove School District) as a call to cancel classes that night. AGSD had a full day. However, sometimes the gym must make a judgement call.

Today (09/30/2010) classes will go on as scheduled.

Should the weather become dangerous, we may end the night early.

To be fair, no attendance marks will be taken today.

KICKS CLINIC & INSTRUCTOR MEETING

Just a reminder about the Kicks Clinic coming up this Saturday...

When: Saturday, September 18th, 2010
Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm

Cost: $20/student
Cost if repeating clinic: $7/student

This clinic will be limited to green belt and above so that we can cover a large number of the kicking techniques. The clinic will cover placement of feet and striking points of the foot. We will work on proper technique, chambering for kicks and how to develop speed and power.

At completion of the clinic, children will receive their kicks patch which is to be displayed on their uniform below the Korean flag patch. Children reviewing the clinic will receive a red star which is to be placed next to the kicks patch. Children displaying this patch will be expected to consistently demonstrate what they have learned in classes thereafter.

Adult students are welcomed and encouraged to help hold pads and assist Instructor Bill.

-------------------------

Instructor Meeting

We will be holding an instructor meeting for all instructors (adult and youth), as well as those who are interested in becoming an instructor.

Being an instructor may not be for you. If you choose to be an instructor but decide it's too much, there will be no hard feelings whatsoever.

The instructor class will be held immediately after the kicks clinic at the gym.

A lunch at Aurora Pizza will be held for instructors after the class.

When: Saturday, September 18th, 2010
Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Back to School

A quick note to say good luck to all of our students returning to school.

Being a martial artist is not just about kicking and punching, but becoming a more well-rounded person.

Without an education, you can never be a true martial artist.

TOURNAMENT DETAILS

Details about the upcoming tournament on Saturday, August 28th...

Check in begins at 8:30am, with the tournament starting at 10:00am

This will be an in-house tournament (DG students only), with youth and adult divisions. Students are encouraged to participate in one, multiple, or all events.

SIGN UPS BEGIN THIS WEEK, WITH THE CUTOFF DATE BEING FRIDAY, AUGUST 20TH

Students receiving their next rank from the upcoming test will be asked to demonstrate their previously learned curriculum. In other words: You won't be expected to do a green belt poomsae if you've just received that rank.

Events include...

* Breaking
* Poomsae (white belts may do hand weapon skills)
* Weapons
* Sparring

COST: $30 FLAT FEE FOR 1 TO ALL EVENTS.

For those sparring: Please remember to have your gear ready or borrow a friend's set beforehand, if necessary. Do not ask to borrow a set on the day of the tournament, as this will certainly slow down our schedule.

In-house tournaments are a wonderful way to become introduced to outside martial arts competitions. Students should take advantage of the fact they will be participating in fair divisions against their own classmates, led by their own instructors.

Please make sure to fill out sign up sheets accurately by Friday, August 20th. This will ensure that instructors are able to create the fairest divisions possible.

ALSO: ADULTS (INCLUDING STUDENTS) ARE NEEDED FOR TASKS SUCH AS ORGANIZATION OF STUDENTS, MEDAL RUNNERS, SCORE KEEPING, AND JUDGING

Etiquette

Attention all students and parents,

A quick reminder about some of our policies on etiquette for students and visitors. There are plenty of others but we ask that you take time to remember these specific ones...

Students

* Remember, when entering the gym: Salute the flags, then bow to the highest belt/instructor. When leaving: Bow to the highest belt/instructor, then salute the flags

* Always wear a clean and neat uniform to class and remember to practice good personal hygiene. Avoid wearing jewlery as it may pose a danger to you or others

* When approaching an instructor: remember to bow and ask to speak to them politely

* Conversations are NOT permitted between students during training time. This is especially true while an instructor is talking. This is seen as extremley disrespectful and will not be tolerated

* Ask permission to take a bathroom break or get a drink (no excessive breaks). DO NOT leave the training area without permission UNLESS IT'S AN EMERGENCY

* Learn the correct way to line up for class. When lining up for class, yield to higher belts, unless they are late. If you have the same rank, students holding their rank for the longer period of time (seniority) have priority. After this, students should act on good will.

* If you come in late to class. Bow in as normal, then sit in meditation at the edge of the training area. You should do this until an instructor allows you into class

* If for any reason you are not in full uniform and belt, you MUST ask the instructor's permission to train. Depending on the situation, you may have to yield to all other belts when lining up

Parents

* Please learn the correct starting time for your child's class. This will ensure they won't be treated "late". Please remember to also pick up your child on time.

* Parents are welcome to observe, but we ask that you do your best in not creating a distraction

* Please DO NOT leave other children in the hall unsupervised. Leaving them with their supervised friend(s) at the gym DOES NOT COUNT as supervision (e.g. leaving a child to play with the other kids while going to the store). UNLESS you ask another parent/adult to take reponsibility beforehand, this puts an unfair duty on instructors and other adults

* AND MOST OF ALL: PLEASE KEEP YOUR VOICES DOWN. Your voices carry a lot further than you may think. When in doubt, use a volume no higher than you would at a library.

Other Special Directions

* Kids who are waiting while parents train: Do your best to stay by the benches indoor, so if your parents turn to look, they can know where you are. DO NOT PESTER/BOTHER your parents over non-emergencies during their training (Batteries for a hand held game, minor arguments with siblings, a snack, etc). This is seen as disrespectful to your parents training as well as the instructors who are teaching a class

* The Dragon Gym of West Grove is NOT A PLAYGROUND! NO ONE is to be playing around in the gym, especially if someone is still in there training (before, during, or after class). This is both disrespectful and dangerous! The gym is for training, not playing with the equipment.

I Am From Dragon Gym

A poem by one of our black belts...

I am from sprained wrists and ankles, from bruises and blood, from sore shoulders that last for weeks...I AM FROM DRAGON GYM

I am from nunchakus and samurais, from staffs and gum suls, from tap outs and kihaps...I AM FROM DRAGON GYM

I am from kicks and punches, from cinder blocks and boards, from sweat and tears...I AM FROM DRAGON GYM

I am from forms and take downs, from sparring and headgear, from falls and trips...I AM FROM DRAGON GYM

I am from demo and tournaments, from medals and trophies, from passing and success...I AM FROM DRAGON GYM
